These took a while to emerge. And there are lots of layers. Layers on layers of layers. Some are emotional. Some are pages from a vintage garden book. Others are regular paint and marbled layers. And in between is the spiritual. These pieces are personal. And now, it's time to let them go.
New Work: Summer Series
I am so, so happy about these new pieces fresh from the studio!
These are the story of my summers ~ this summer and the many before. The colors are inspired by Minnesota greens and Push-up orange (the frozen treat!). Light and airy, these pieces conjure up the sound of loons, the taste of fried sunnies, and the smell of approaching thunderstorms.
I have been working a lot on wood panel lately and even though I find it more challenging and limiting than paper, I'm enjoying the exploration. I've also been playing with incorporating other artistic mediums and materials into my pieces ~ in this case, adding paint, wax and glaze.
These one-of-a-kind, original pieces are for sale in my shop. Head on over to check them all out.
In the Studio
Revisiting projects. Seeing things differently. Seeing things the same. Open to possibilities. Eager to continue. Willing to let it unfold. Committed to results.
Beginning
This is the exciting part. To put an idea in motion. To leap. To trust the process. To trust one's self. That blank slate is waiting to receive. It welcomes you.
Trippy
You should really see this in person...
Overmarble Love
It was an Overmarble kind of day last week!
The Overmarble is one of my favorite marbling techniques. I can't wait for participants in my intro-to-marbling eCourse Clouds on Water to dive in and try it. We'd love to have you join us too! Class starts June 8. Visit www.CloudsOnWater.com for details.
Bubble Gum Beauty
No tricks. Just technique. 100% 2D marbled paper. 100% fun.
My friend told me she thought this looked like the best bubble gum EVER and she wanted to eat it! That totally made my day!
Don't forget to leave a comment here on my Gratitude Giveaway announcement for your chance to win a spot in the Clouds on Water eCourse. Winners will be announced on Thursday.
Epic Fail, Epic Beauty
This weekend, I was messing around with different rake and comb sizes in the production of traditional patterns. I'm making handouts for my Clouds on Water eCourse and I want students to see how different a pattern can look just by changing up the size of the tool (even the strokes are exactly the same).
I'm having a blast doing this and learning a lot along the way, as one usually does when one looks at something from a different perspective. For example, I discovered you CANNOT push the boundaries of the Scallop pattern too far before it becomes completely unrecognizable. It's a pattern that wants to be ~ needs to be ~ tight. In the piece above I went loose. Technically, one would call this piece a failed attempt at Scallop. And yet, I keep getting lost in its beauty, movement, and details and can't help but call it a success.
Marbling is all about not being too quick to judge, not being too quick to dismiss, not being too rigid with expectations. It's about flipping the switch and being open to the possibilities.
Jeepers...Another One to Sigh Over
It's amazing how a simple traditional pattern like Gelgit can be so elegantly beautiful. This is perhaps the easiest of patterns to make yet one can come back to it again and again, never tiring of making it or exhaust its endless variations. This piece would have a totally different feel if the space between Gelgits were closer together or farther apart, if I made it with a rake instead of a stylus, if I added movement to my strokes...not to mention changing up the order in which I threw the paints or changing the paint colors themselves. And this is the appeal of marbling: there is no wrong way to do something...just another way.
Today is the last day to take advantage of the Early Bird ($179) and Buddy Specials ($159/each when you sign up with a friend) for my Intro-to-Marbling eCourse Clouds on Water. Visit the registration page for more info or to sign up.
Sigh...I Could Look at this all Day Long
Some days call for a Reverse Bouquet. In your favorite Yellows and a dash of Sap Green.
One of the many traditional patterns you'll learn in the Clouds on Water intro-to-marbling eCourse. I'd love to show you how it's done!
Perfect Marbling Day in LA
The weather in LA these past two days has been PERFECT for marbling. It doesn't get any better than this. Seriously. And it happens so rarely where I don't have to fight the elements of Mother Nature (mainly heat and low humidity levels). I'm teaching private lessons in the morning this week but as soon as those are over, I'm gonna have some hard-core FUN in the tank!
WIP: Marbling on Backgrounds
Current studio project: marbling over painted backgrounds. Waaaaaaaaay harder than you'd think. At least for me!
