And then there were Two

Large and small coin purses made with marbled fabric by Barb Skoog. The photo above is the new line of large and small coin purses made by the fashion designer Jeanie Joe using my marbled fabric. I posted it to my Facebook page last week and within an hour, I had sold three of the five in the picture above plus one I had not even photographed yet. You have no idea how happy I was to send them off to new homes where I know they are going to be loved as much as I love them. One person said it was the perfect "pickle purse ~ you know, for band-aids, ibuprofen, things you need when you're in a pickle." That is awesome.

While the talented Jeanie Joe is making more, I have added the last two large coin purses to my shop.

Details:

  • $35 + shipping (and tax where applicable)
  • Each coin purse is one-of-a-kind, made with high-quality materials, and washable.
  • Large coin purses measure 5" long at the base, tapering to 4" at the top. They are just over an inch wide and about 3.5" tall. Credit cards fit comfortably in them. And, as noted above, they are the perfect "pickle purse."
  • The black coin purse has a silver clasp.
  • The earth-tone coin purse has a brushed bronze clasp.

Thank You, South Pas!

Marbling Demo by Barb Skoog It was another delightful evening for me at the South Pasadena Arts Crawl last week. So much gratitude for all the wonderful people who stopped by the demonstration, asked great questions, and oohed and ahhed and clapped for the "big reveal." I am especially grateful for the people who supported my work through purchases ~ I hope you love your wrapping papers, bookmarks, coin purses, and cards.

Bookmark-a-Cause

Hand-marbled Bookmarks by Barb Skoog I am so, so excited to share with you my latest project: Bookmark-A-Cause.

For over a year I've been trying to figure out a way to tie my artwork into a charitable cause. When I ran Hope's Flame ("candles for those who believe a little hope can go a long way"), a portion of all of my sales went to one of three non-profit organizations I passionately supported. It was an easy and natural fit ~ candles and charity. But with my artwork, simply saying a portion of sales went to a great cause felt very forced. People buy art because it speaks to them, not because they want to support a charity. And my artwork is a different price point than my candles. People might by a $10 candle just to support a cause but they are not going to buy a $150 piece of art just to support one.

Hand-marbled bookmarks by Barb Skoog

This summer, a friend of mine had a book published and she approached me about making bookmarks she could give away as gifts. I mocked up a few ideas but in the end she decided not to do it. However, I was left with a handful of great bookmarks and as I started to use them myself, I felt pulled toward the ones I made using canvas.

And that's when it hit me ~ hand-marbled bookmarks + non-profit organizations = A WIN! I had found a way to align my work with a cause. And it felt very right.

Hand-marbled bookmarks by Barb Skoog

I love marbling on canvas but it does have its challenges ~ the larger weave makes it difficult to marble a delicate or more intricate pattern or design. Instead, I tend to marble what I call "movement" designs ~ images that create a sense of fluidity. I also do a lot of overmarbles to add depth and texture. As a larger piece, I'm never a fan of my canvas creations, but when I cut them down to bookmark size (2"x8"), they are fantastic. As the saying goes, "the devil is in the details," and wowzer, if that isn't true with these bookmarks. Sometimes I find myself staring at my bookmark instead of reading my book!

Hand-marbled Bookmarks by Barb Skoog

My first round of 100 bookmarks will be available at the South Pasadena Arts Crawl this Saturday, March 8. They are $5 and proceeds benefit SPACE Arts Center in South Pasadena. I'll have them at Book'em Mysteries Bookstore (1118 Mission Street) where I'll be doing my marbling demonstration from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. They will also be available at SPACE (1506 Mission Street).

And I would be terribly remiss if I didn't mention that all the canvas is being donated by Artist Brand Canvas, a family-owned and operated company selling stretched canvas to artists for over 43 years. All their materials are American made and their wood is sourced from a company using sustainable practices. And remember how said marbling on canvas has its challenges ~ well, their canvas is the ONLY canvas I have been able to marble on 100% successfully. It is such high-quality ~ with no fillers or crappy chemicals that interfere with the binding process (which is the main problem with other canvas...the paint slides right off!). I'm not getting paid by them  to say this. I truly believe in their product and am THRILLED they are part of the Bookmark-a-Cause family!

2014CalendarGroupMy bad...is your lucky day! Somehow I overlooked one of my 2014 calendars (which sold out by mid-December) and I stumbled across it as I was cleaning up my studio getting ready for my next round of spring classes.

I've mentioned before how much I love this year's calendar, filled with images of my favorite pieces alongside words of wisdom from my learnings in the studio.

I can't just let this beauty sit in a drawer somewhere so I'm giving it away! Simply say "Hi" in the comment section (click the balloon above) to be entered into the drawing. Contest ends Wednesday, February 12 at midnight PST.

The Local and Me

The Local Salon in North Hollywood ~ home to the first exhibit of my extra marbled large pieces (26" x 40"). In December, I had the distinct honor of being asked by the owner of The Local, an eco-friendly, organic hair salon in North Hollywood, if I would be willing to exhibit some of my artwork there. Rosie has been doing my hair ever since I moved to California (more than 10 years!) and when she opened The Local last year, she committed to having a rotating exhibit of local artists on her walls. She also participates in NoHo's LitFest, providing a space for writers to do their readings. For Rosie, her business is as much about being engaged and involved with the surrounding community members as it is about styling their hair.

Rosie's place has a modern, soft contemporary feel to it; exposed brick, steel and black-wood fixtures, high ceilings and exposed beams. I knew immediately that my floating frames made with wood backgrounds and steel hardware would be a perfect fit.

I also brought in several pieces from the marbled wood panels series I worked on this summer and hung them around the reception area.

But what I was most excited about was that she had large, white walls reaching forever into the sky in which I could FINALLY show off my "monster-tank" creations ~ marbled papers measuring 26" x 40".

Ready to hang ~ extra large marbled pieces.

Stop by The Local to check out my marbled artwork!

I am so honored that Rosie wanted to have my artwork in her salon. And I'm thrilled that I have a body of work that fits perfectly in the beautiful, inviting setting she's created. I hope you get a chance to stop by and check it out ~ and also get pampered by Rosie or one of the other great stylists at The Local.

January Header

AmoebaYellow I just love seeing my pieces from many different angles, distances, and perspectives. In this case, getting *very* up close and personal with this piece, which this month's header comes from, feels so different than stepping back and looking at the whole picture.

This piece is from one of my favorite series that came out of my summer session: the Amoeba Series. The series started as an exploration of creating interesting backgrounds on which to overmarble. When I teach, I like to show my students how surface tension and the order in which the paints are thrown affect color. I do this by laying down the same color over and over again. This way they can see that the one color comes out in various shades, making it look like you threw four or five or six different paint colors even though you only threw one. The more often I demoed this and the more I perfected a particular technique, I started to see something interesting...the end result was what I can only describe as cloud or cotton-ball like. And this is what I was exploring when I created a ton of backgrounds sheets.

Marbled Paper ~ from the Amoeba Series by Barb Skoog

Since the background themselves were so intriguing and could stand on their own, I knew the next step ~ the overmarble ~ needed to be understated yet dramatically complementary. I did not want to cover up or hide that gorgeous background but whatever was on top needed to be strong and stand on its own as well.

Marbled Paper ~ from the Amoeba Series by Barb Skoog

A few weeks later, I was playing around with dispersant to see what kind of unique shapes I could make and that's when I decided to combine the two techniques ~ and the Amoeba Series was born.

Marbled Paper ~ from the Amoeba Series by Barb Skoog

The pieces in this series are so thought provoking to me and I had a hard time picking which one I wanted to use to create the header this month ~ especially because of the different look and feel it creates when the original is resized and cropped. It took me a while to warm to this header ~ I was so into the background that I didn't give much thought to the overmarble (the "amoeba"). But now I am in love with the fluidity and the texture of the overmarble ~ I want to ride those waves and rivers and see where they take me!

Marbled Nature

Marbled Leaves

I posted photos of these on Facebook a few weeks ago and just realized I did not update my blog with the story behind them! If you can't tell, these are marbled leaves. Yes, marbled leaves. And they are stunning.

Close up of Marbled Leaves by Barb Skoog

I'm not a big fan of removing things from nature. Be in it, experience it, enjoy it ~ but leave as small a footprint as possible. I don't collect rocks from riverbanks (which often are homes to creatures underneath) or wildflowers from mountain sides (how can more flowers bloom the next year without a seed source?). I didn't even collect sand from Ninety-mile Beach in New Zealand when I was there a few years ago (if everyone took sand, it would become Nine-mile Beach). But I found these leaves under some beautiful trees that lined a public open space in Old Town Pasadena. Based on the scant number of leaves on the concrete ground surrounding them, it was obvious that every day someone comes by and cleans them up. Figuring the leaves likely end up in a landfill somewhere rather than being composted (where the nutrients could be returned to the soil from which it came), I squatted down and started picking them up. I had no intention, initially, to marble them. I was simply drawn to their beautiful colors and was going to scatter them on my dinning room table until they dried up ~ at which point I'd then put them in *my* compost pile.

Marbled Leaves drying on line

It just so happened I had my small tank up and when I got home with the leaves, the idea to marble on them was born. I had no idea how it was going to turn out. Would the alum eat through the leaves? Did they need to be alummed at all (the answer to that is yes)? Would the paint even show up? Would the leaves just fold or curl up making it impossible to work on?

Clearly, the experiment worked. I loved the leaves so much that I decided to spray them with a gloss finish in order to preserve them ~ the added bonus being that the colors really POPPED when I did.

So the other day when I was on my walk around my neighborhood I came across a ginkgo tree that was still dropping leaves. I scooped up the ones that were in the street and rushed home to make bath. I was excited to marbled on them.

Marbled ginkgo leaves

Alas, as with paper or wood or fabric, all leaves are not created equal and these were MUCH more difficult to marble on. Even with alum, the paint just did not want to stay on. And some paints worked better than others. So I am less than thrilled with this batch of marbled leaves, but I got another handful last night and will marble on them today, tweaking my bath, paints, and process along the way.

Despite not being easy to marble on, I really like the *shape* of the ginkgo leaf...and when I grouped it with other leaves and put them on a marbled wood panel, I liked what I saw.

I think I'm going to have to learn about encaustic painting and create a series of these next fall. Something to look forward to...

Best Headline for Marbling EVER

Barb Skoog Marbling article in the South Pasadena Patch

Okay, so I may be a little biased and the headline is more about *me* and less about marbling as a whole...but still ~ it's pretty cool.

A few weeks ago, the editor of the South Pasadena Patch dropped by my open studio. I wasn't expecting a full on interview, with video and images and lots of questions about my beginnings as a marbler. I just thought he wanted to come see what this marbling thing was all about to decide whether or not to even write a story about it. Next thing I know, I'm in the Patch!

Perhaps it was better that I didn't expect a story to come from his initial visit. The piece he wrote really communicates my love for the art form ~ and I probably would have been way more historical and technical than personal if I had thought he was writing an article on what I was saying. In the end, I'm thrilled with the angle he took.

You can check out the piece here: http://southpasadena.patch.com/groups/arts-and-entertainment/p/cloud-artist-marbles-her-way-to-happiness

Happy New Year everyone! Hope it's a "marble-ous" one!

Flower Love!

IMG_0260 These are three pieces I am so in love with. Yes, I will admit to loving my own work. I can't help it. They were fun to make and the results surpassed my expectations. Marbling on wood presents all sorts of problems but these three were destined to be awesome ~ they didn't cause me any trouble (maybe that's why I love them so).

IMG_0258

The vintage images are of flowers and came from an old gardening book. I added them to the wood panels and then marbled over it all, choosing colors that pulled the images out so they didn't get lost behind the marbling. The pieces measure 6" x 8" and have an extra deep 2" profile that is painted white.

IMG_0256

I think it all came together nicely ~ so much so I'm working on another series BUT WITH A TWIST!!! Stay tuned to see what comes next!!

If you are interested in purchasing these, they will be available at the Santa Barbara Holiday Open House for $55 each. If you can't make it there but want one, email me (Cheers "at" BarbSkoog "dot" com) and I'll set it aside for you to pick up or I can ship it to you (shipping costs apply).
